Passport, visa types, Schengen documents and common mistakes: prepare for your first trip abroad.
On a first trip abroad the passport and visa process can make you a little uneasy. Yet it is orderly and predictable if you proceed in the right order. This guide gives a general framework; because visa rules change by country and over time, always confirm current conditions with the relevant consulate or your agency. The information below is not legal advice.
1. Check your passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the travel end date (for Schengen three months and not older than 10 years). An appointment is made at the population directorate; the process takes one to three weeks. Children also need separate passports.
2. Find out whether you need a visa
Turkish citizens can travel visa-free to some countries such as Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia. Egypt and Jordan need an e-visa, while Japan and Schengen countries need a consular visa. The maximum stay differs for each country; Schengen has a 90-days-in-180-days rule.
3. Typical documents for a Schengen visa
- Passport and photocopies of old passports
- Biometric photo (35x45 mm, taken within the last 6 months)
- Travel health insurance (30,000 EUR cover)
- Flight and hotel reservations
- Bank statements for the last 3 months (sufficient balance for daily expenses)
- Employment or student certificate, payslip
- Application form and visa fee
4. Timing
Schengen applications can be made at most six months and at least 15 days before travel. In high season (April – August) appointments may be given four to six weeks ahead. We therefore suggest paying a deposit and starting the visa support package as soon as you choose a tour.
5. Common mistakes
- Depositing a large sum into the bank account just before applying (an inactive account raises suspicion)
- Hotel and flight reservations not matching application form details
- Photos not meeting the standard
- Missing or expired insurance documents
- Going to the wrong application centre
Our visa specialists prepare your document list individually, check your file and book your appointment. The visa decision always rests with the consulate, but a complete file raises the chance of acceptance.
After applying
After applying, the decision usually comes within 5–15 working days. If the visa is approved your passport is handed back to you; always check the start and end dates, number of entries and permitted stay. If there is an error, notify the consulate at once. For refused applications the reason is given in writing and there is a right of appeal.
